X (the platform formerly known as Twitter) has undergone substantial change since the 2022 acquisition. The verification system that used to indicate "this is who they say they are" has been replaced by a paid subscription, the algorithm has shifted to favor subscribers and engagement bait content, and a meaningful chunk of the platform's user base migrated to alternatives like Threads and Bluesky in 2023 to 2024. For working models, X is still a relevant platform, but the playbook for growing a following has changed significantly.
This article covers how X actually works in 2026: what the algorithm rewards now, the realistic role of the paid X Premium subscription, and how to use the platform as a complement to (rather than a replacement for) the visual platforms where most modeling discovery happens.
The new growth landscape on X
The algorithm now strongly favors X Premium subscribers. Posts from paying subscribers get prioritized in the For You feed, and replies from subscribers appear higher in conversation threads. For a working model treating X as a growth channel, the $8 to $16 monthly subscription is essentially the cost of entry. Without it, your reach is structurally capped no matter how good your content is.
Engagement timing matters more than posting frequency. X rewards posts that gather quick engagement in the first 30 to 60 minutes. Posting at the right times for your audience (typically morning and evening for US time zones) outperforms posting frequently. Two well-timed posts per day with strong early engagement outperforms 10 posts spread randomly.
Reply-game over post-game. The discovery mechanism on X has shifted toward replies in larger conversations. Replying to popular posts in your industry niche (fashion, photography, marketing, modeling) with substantive responses surfaces your account to those threads' viewers. This builds following faster in 2026 than original posting alone.
Visual content underperforms on X. Despite Twitter's history with visual content, the current algorithm de-prioritizes image-only posts compared to text or video. Posting your portfolio pictures alone will get less reach than a strong text post or a short video. Use X for voice, hot takes, behind the scenes thinking, and conversation. Save the visual portfolio for Instagram.
How verification works now
Verification (the blue checkmark) is now a paid subscription, not an identity validator. Anyone can pay for X Premium and get the checkmark. As a result, the checkmark no longer signals "this is verified to be who they say they are." It signals "this account pays for the subscription." For working models this is mostly a non-issue (clients understand the new system) but worth knowing when potential clients ask about your verified status.
Threads is the parallel platform worth knowing about. Meta launched Threads as a Twitter alternative in 2023 and it has grown into a real platform with a different algorithm and audience. If your X strategy is working, consider mirroring posts to Threads. The audiences overlap but are not identical, and Threads' algorithm rewards different kinds of posts. See our companion article on growing on Threads for the details.
Don't treat X as a primary modeling platform. X is a real platform for working models, but it is not where modeling discovery happens. Clients find models on Instagram, TikTok, and the marketplace. X is where you build voice, network with industry, and engage with conversations. Treat it accordingly: a secondary platform that compounds with your primary visual platforms, not a replacement for them.
